Discover Lucignano: Old Town, Art and Hiking Trails

Lucignano combines a historic center with art and architecture from several periods, as well as hiking trails of varying lengths and formats. Annual events add further highlights in May and June. This lets you give different weight to culture, outdoor activities and event dates when planning your trip.

A townscape with a distinctive shape

Lucignano’s historic center has an elliptical layout, with its streets arranged concentrically. The town’s structure itself shapes the townscape, alongside its individual sights. Porta San Giusto is integrated into the walls and serves as an entrance to the historic old town. As you explore, you can focus both on the layout of the streets and on the town’s buildings and art.

Art and architecture from several periods

The Museo Comunale preserves masterpieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as the Albero d’Oro. This reliquary is 2.70 meters tall and was made between 1350 and 1471. The Museo Comunale tour in the 15th-century Palazzo Pretorio also includes the Sala delle Udienze. The Albero d’Oro offers a specific point of reference within the collection, bringing together a precisely dated period of creation and the history of a single work of art.

The Chiesa di San Francesco is a Gothic church of Tuscan architecture. Construction began in 1248 and was completed by 1289 at the latest. The church also houses the late-14th-century fresco “Trionfo della morte,” attributed to Bartolo di Fredi. Here, the building’s history and a later work of art can be viewed in one place, while the fresco’s date provides its own point of reference in time.

The Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo features further architectural highlights: its entrance is marked by an impressive travertine staircase, and its main altar, designed by Andrea Pozzo, dates from the early 18th century. The Rocca adds to this picture with a small tower and a massive keep. It is a striking architectural feature of Lucignano. Together, these buildings offer a range of points of interest for a visit that is not focused solely on the museum collection.

Compare hiking trails by length and format

Three routes with differing lengths and courses are highlighted for hiking. The Via Clanis stage runs in a straight line from Lucignano to Monte San Savino and is about 23 kilometers long. The Lucignano–Rigomagno–Calcione–Lucignano loop is laid out differently: it covers about 20 kilometers and has around 500 meters of elevation gain.

At about 11 kilometers, the Sentiero di Cosimo, Variante 15B, is the shorter of the two loop routes described. It passes through vineyards, forests and meadows. The comparison brings out the differences: the Via Clanis is a linear stage between two towns; the loop via Rigomagno and Calcione is longer and includes elevation gain; and the Sentiero di Cosimo is a shorter circular route through varied landscapes. Events in May and June

The Maggiolata Lucignanese takes place every year on the last two Sundays in May. Its program includes allegorical floats entirely decorated with flowers, music bands, folk groups and a historic procession through the streets of Lucignano. The exact calendar dates vary each year, so check the dates for the relevant year when planning your trip.

Camminmangiando takes place every year in June. The event combines hiking with discovering the authentic flavors of the Valdichiana. The two events therefore differ in their focus as well: the Maggiolata features flower-covered floats, music and a procession, while Camminmangiando combines outdoor activity with regional flavors.
