Portoferraio

There are a number of town-ports on the largest island of the Tuscan archipelago, Elba. The main town of Elba, Portoferraio, is a popular tourist destination and the largest harbor of the island. The name of the town means “the iron harbor”, as Elba has been the area of mining since the times of the Etruscans.

The historical part of the town has preserved powerful curtain walls of the XVI century, churches, such as Santissimo, Sacramento, Forte della Stella, Misericordia, etc. Old buildings of the library and town council have remained intact as well. The Square of the Republic, Plaza della Repubblica, with the Cathedral and the town hall on it is the center of the town. The main attraction is the Winter Palace of Napoleon located on a hill between Forte Stella and Forte Falcone. You can reach the palace going up the street-stairs of the old town.

No doubt, you should visit the haven of Portoferraio. You can rest quietly on the coast decorated with colorful boats and houses at a café or a restaurant admiring the sea view and enjoying sea food.

Beautiful beaches, such as Biodola, Viticcio and Procchio, are located very close to the town. There are various options for comfortable beach recreation and taking up water sports there.

Lovers of shopping won’t be disappointed as well. On the island of Elba, in particular in Portoferrraio, it is worth checking private stores in search of jewelry and souvenirs made of gemstones. Their production is a famous traditional craft for local people.

Creative traditions are connected not only with material culture. The main events of the festival “Elba, the musical island of Europe” have been held in Portoferraio for more than ten years already. That is why every year, in September, the town welcomes gifted musicians and their no less gifted admirers.
