Montepulciano is an old Tuscan town, which is justly considered to be “the pearl of the XVI century”. It appeared much earlier, but has preserved its medieval look. Guests of the town meet magnificent Renaissance constructions, for example San Biadgio Church or the Palaceof Contucci (Palazzo Contucci). The Palace of the Commune (Palazzo Communale) is located on the central square, Piazza Grande. Its appearance alludes you to the Palace of Veccio in Florence. The resemblance is not a coincidence. Florence has governed Montepulciano since the end of the XIV century. There is the Cathedral close to the Palace. It's worth drawing your attention to the gothic triptych, created by Taddeo di Bartollo. The historical part of the town is surrounded by the curtain wall.
One more attraction is local wine, which brought fame to the town. Its name is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano; it has a fine, a bit harsh taste, almost the same as the main Tuscan wine “Chianti”. You can enjoy this great wine at some wine shop or sampling center. There are plenty of them in Montepulciano. The slogan «Degustazione libera» invites you to taste wine on the house. However, a full lunch or dinner will be rather expensive, but the quality of cuisine, service, and local atmosphere are definitely worth it.
