Massa-Carrara is the very northern province of Tuscany. The two capitals located only a few kilometers away from each other gave the province its name. The stone pits themselves are a part of the Apuan Park.

Pontremoli is a historical center located in the northern part of Massa-Carrara. Its Archaeological museum, Museo Civico Archeologico, gives a unique opportunity to observe stele statues made of sandstone around 2000 b.c.
