The settlement of Pitigliano is located on the so-called Etruscan coast of Tuscany.
The ancient Etruscans founded the settlement on a high hill (300 meters above the sea level), and by this made it almost inaccessible for conquerors. It was possible to notice an enemy long before him getting close to the town, and take some defensive actions. For present-day tourists the location of the town gives a great chance to admire the surrounding landscape. The most fascinating scenery opens up from the point at Madonna delle Grazie Church.
Pitigliano is famous not only for its ancient history, but also for its modern accomplishments. The most famous local product is the great “Bianco di Pitigliano” dry wine . You can sample it at one of the small taverns, where you will also be offered delicious dishes of Tuscan cuisine.
Pitigliano has kept its medieval appearance and the atmosphere of peace and slow pace, which are created by narrow streets, palaces, towers and ancient wells. The magnificent Orsini Palace (Fortezza Orsini) is among town's attractions. It was erected approximately in 1500. Nowadays, it houses a small archaeological museum (Museo Vivico Archeologico). The relatively not large medieval Cathedral of Pitigliano got its barocco facade in the XVIII century. The interior and exterior of the church were restored in 1970; so today tourists admire the Cathedral in its full splendor. There is a Jewish district in Pitigliano. It's worth having a look at the Synagogue and visiting the Jewish museum here. There are kosher sweets for sale at a store nearby.
You can get in touch with the times of the Etruscans if you visit the necropolis (necropoli di Poggio Buco). The Etruscan caves are located here. No doubt, you will get an unforgettable experience.
