Castello dei Conti Guidi erected in XIII century is the most well-preserved mediaeval fortress in Arezzo. The bridge across defensive ditch leads to the inner yard, decorated with coats of arms of the heads of a monastic order and vicars of Florence republic. The chapel in the castle keeps stunning frescoes. The first floor (“the second”in Amer. English) exhibits museum expositions. There’s also a splendid library with more than 15 000 volumes including incunabula and rare manuscripts. The magnificence of the library is closely interwoven with the wealth of aristocratic family Guidi. The family possessed many feuds in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. The might of the family broke down in 1289 after the battle between Florence and Arezzo. Florence republic defeated Guidi and annexed Poppi – a small town beneath the castle.
Catello di Romena is a castle in Arezzo which is connected with the name of Dante. He mentioned it “Devine comedy”. The castle was erected around 1000 AD and became the most fortified building which controlled the whole Casentino valley. Triple interior walls and towers have been preserved fairly good till now.
