Viareggio masks
(Tuscan Events)Viareggio carnival welcomes everyone!
31st October at high noon is the deadline for Viareggio masks sketches presentation. The masks will decorate the Viareggio carnival in 2009.
Viareggio holiday is different from a traditional masquerade in Venice. Only kids change their usual clothing and wear the costumes of mythical creatures. The thing is that Viareggio carnival is a clearly satirical event. The main protagonists are papier- mâché dolls who represent ludicrous figures of famous politicians, businessmen, sportsmen, cultural workers, etc. The main characters of the carnival are being transported on the special platforms. Familiar masks are said to be the markers of both popularity and bad reputation. The previous carnival, for instance, presented the figure of the French president. The heart on his neck had the sign: „Carla mon amour”. That was an outright allusion of his relationships with Carla Bruni.
Still not all the Viareggio masks reflect current events. One of the dolls has been taking part in the carnival since 1930. This is the famous Burlamacco by Uberto Bonetti. Next year the carnival will celebrate 100th anniversary of Uberto Bonetti.
In 2009 Viareggio will organize 5 main perfomances: 8th, 15th, 22nd, 24th, February and 1st, March.
