Monteriggioni Wears a Crown of Towers
(0) marks: 0The long Tuscan list of medieval festivals includes an important one held at the ancient town of Monteriggioni. This is the festival called «Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona» which means Monteriggioni wears a crown of towers.
It was Dante Alighieri who christened the festival. The fortress of Monteriggioni impressed the great poet so deeply that he used this site in one of the songs of the Divine Comedy: «...pero che come sulla cerchia tonda Monteriggioni di torri si corona». The quotation of the immortal poet Dante got its own life in the XX century.
For the first time, the festival of «Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona» was held in the year of 1991. However, in no time it turned to be one of the best medieval feasts of Italy.
«Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona» is organized at the first and the second July weekend. Festive events begin on Friday nights and continue through the weekend.
The streets of Monteriggioni are full of craftsmen praising their goods to the skies, cooks inviting to try various dishes, pastors preaching, pilgrims telling stories about faraway countries, jugglers and actors entertaining public by their performances…The life of the medieval town is running it course.
The sponsors of the festival revive not only the everyday life of the medieval town, but also the most important battles in the history of Monteriggioni. For example, the anniversary 20th festival reproduced two epoch-making battles. The first weekend reconstructed the battle between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines in the year of 1254. The second weekend was dedicated to the battle of 1554 when as the result of the betrayal Monteriggioni got under Florence power.
The holders of the event prepare a special program for kids. Little visitors are invited to theater performances, puppet shows, art workshops.
The fire show is a specific visiting card of the «Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona» festival. It lasts for a couple of nights. The charming fire element, dance energy and fascinating theater effects make the festival really special.
The fireworks round up the festival of «Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona». They are not just a farewell; they are also a promise to meet again next year.
