The province of Arezzo
Arezzo is the province in the East of Tuscany and in the central part of Italy correspondently. The advantage of this region is in its equable climate. The northeastern part is defended by the ridges which look like an amphitheatre around Casentino Valley – one of the most beautiful parts of peninsula. The centre of the valley which keeps the unique fauna of the Northern Apennines is crossed by the river Arno. The National park (Parco Naz. delle Foreste Casentinesi-M. Falterona Campigna) was created in this place in order to preserve the treasures of the nature of the valley.
Generosity of the nature helped to develop textile industry in Arezzo. Stia – one of the significant cities in the province is known for originally coloured wool “casentino”. Apparently it was sold in Mediaeval times on the famous market in Porciano Castle. Arezzo is specialised not only in textile. It is the main centre of gold production in Italy. Still the province attracts most of all by its spiritual values kept in the town, castles and cloisters.
Famous people of Arezzo:
Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (70-8 BC) – patron of art who’s family name became a common noun.
Guido d’Arezzo (997–1050) – musician, introduced the titles of notes and musical notation which has been used till present days.
Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374) – humanist and poet, was laurelled in recognition of his talent in Capitolium.
Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) – architect and artist, the author of the book “The Lives of the Most Eminent Italian Architects, Painters and Sculptors” (Le Vite de' più eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scultori italiani).
